This image was from a family session I shot a few months ago. The kids ranged in age between 4-1 years old. My approach with children is to document moments that as a mom, I would want remembered. This moment unfolded when this little one’s brother, sister and parents were busy putting on coats and shoes to go in their backyard. She crawled over to the back door and waited for her turn. At that moment, their dog appeared. I love how she is looking at him and he is looking back at the camera.

Before & After
I metered this image for the baby and wanted the rest of the frame to fall into darkness. To do that, I chose to underexpose the image. I also shot from above to give her the sense of smallness compared to her surroundings. In Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), I adjusted the exposure just a touch. I also added contrast and warmth. Then to finish the image, I added a slight vignette and brightened the center of the image. I thought about removing her dad’s shoes but ultimately kept them because I liked how they added to the story but I did remove the small spot on the rug.
