A Year of Stories – He Naps

Nap time has been a struggle in our house recently. He tries his best to put off going to sleep. I have caught him playing, reading and sneaking television all while he was supposed to be sleeping. Some days I don’t even try because it is just so much work! Other days, I plan too many activities in the mornings in the hopes that he might rest in the afternoon. Sometimes that works and other times, I find this. Him asleep somewhere late in the day. I never have the heart to wake him so I watch him sleep and hope that bedtime isn’t too much of a struggle.

100 Summer Days – July Favorites

July is one of my favorite months. With 4th of July celebrations and my birthday soon after, it always feel like a fun month. We were able to see some old friends too. That may have been the highlight of the month for me (and Miss M!). Reconnecting with old friends is always good for the soul. I only have one more month of summer images to share and I’m in disbelief that the end of summer is so close. That’s why I love the 100 summer days project so much. It allows me to slow down, even if just for a few minutes, and soak in the activities we love and enjoy. There is something so special about documenting these moments for my children. I love to look back them during the dead of winter and remember that the warmth of summer won’t be too far off.

A Year of Stories – She Makes the Best Days Ever!

I was more than disappointed when we tried to attend the hot air balloon festival. The balloons were no where to be found. I guess the wind conditions weren’t favorable and that meant everyone had to wait it out. She didn’t mind though. I have heard her say, more than once, that this day is the best ever. Her positive outlook is so contagious. I admire her ability to find joy in the everyday and to proclaim that joy for the world to hear. She didn’t care about the balloons. Instead she turned this evening into an adventure watching the helicopters, eating cake and enjoying life!

Newborn Delivered at Flower Hospital

When I got the text from this family that baby Emersen had arrived, I knew their room number was familiar. Turns out, it was the exact same room I had shot another fresh 24 hospital session in just a few weeks ago. What are the chances! This delivery/recovery room was so spacious. It must have been so nice to not have to change rooms after her sweet baby girl. I remember being so tired after having M but I couldn’t rest because we were waiting to be transferred. I just wanted to sleep! Haha! It is so nice that more hospitals in the area are keeping moms in one room. Check out more from their session here.

Before & After

Doesn’t this moment just melt your heart? Dad was so in love with his sweet baby. I wanted to play up the backlight from the window by converting this to black and white. I used my usual preset from Erin Hensley (window light). Then I selectively adjusted the highlight slider to blow out more of the window. I tweaked the shadow slider so dad and baby would stand out more. Then, I cropped in a bit closer and cloned out the electrical socket. I fished the processing by adding a little bit of a vignette. I love how this conversion allows the viewer to focus on the emotion in this image.

Toledo Zoo Splash Pad

One thing that I missed so much about living in Texas was the abundance of splash pads. When you have more than one kid to look after, a pool can be a scary place but a splash pad is the perfect compromise. I was super happy to hear that the Toledo Zoo was opening one last year. Finally, we could run and splash to our hearts content! Earlier this summer, I took my little man and his cousin for some refreshing fun while big sis was at art camp. I though the water features were fun but man was that cement slippery! If you decide to let your kids play, water shoes are a good idea. Luckily on this day, we had his rain boots so that helped him from keeping the falls away.

Before & After

I shot this image during mid afternoon. The sun kept going in and out behind clouds, which actually made it a bit easier for me. A cloudy day will usually have more even light and you won’t have to battle with harsh shadows or squinty eyes. This image didn’t need much to make it pop. I followed my usual steps of adjusting exposure, contrast and shadows. Then I increased the warmth just a bit and finished it with a radial vignette. When you can get a good straight out of camera, there isn’t usually much that you will need to do to polish it up.
