Christmas Photos with Santa in Toledo
Christmas Photos with Santa in Toledo can be so much more than a quick photo on Santa’s lap. My Magical Moments with Santa sessions give kids time to warm up, share their Christmas wishes, and enjoy a little one on one time with the big guy. If you’re thinking about Santa photos this Christmas, I’m sharing what to expect, what to wear, and a few tips for kids who may need a little extra time with Santa. I’m Cynthia Dawson, a Toledo family, maternity, and newborn photographer who loves creating photos that help families remember these quickly changing seasons.
A Different Kind of Santa Experience
We all have that photo…you know the one with Santa where your kid is crying so hard and it’s both funny and sad at the same time? One year while we were picking out a Christmas tree, Santa just happened to be at the tree farm, so we waited in line to see him. My middle son was just under 2 at the time and he was not having it. I remember Santa just holding his smile the whole time, even when he was trying to run away. Looking back now, I find the whole thing so funny and really appreciate that Santa’s commitment to looking happy, but we can do so much better!!
Especially because some kids LOVE Santa.
They have been waiting forever to tell him what they want for Christmas. They have questions. Lots of questions. And when they finally see him, you can almost see their little brains trying to figure out how Santa is actually standing right there in front of them.
I love that part of Christmas.
I’ve dreamed about offering Santa sessions for so long, and now that I’ve been doing them for a few years, I think I love them even more. I want kids to have time to actually enjoy being with Santa instead of rushing through a quick photo.
There is such a short window when Santa feels completely real and seeing him is a really big deal. They can talk to him, tell him all about their Christmas list, and maybe finally get an answer to whatever they have been wondering about the North Pole.
And I get to photograph it for you as it all unfolds.

More Santa, Less Standing in Line
Christmas photos with Santa in Toledo at the photo studio is a little different than standing in a long line while your child gets more antsy by the minute, only to have about .2 seconds to actually talk to the big guy.
Here, they get time with him.
Some kids walk in and run right over because they have been waiting ALL YEAR to tell Santa what is on their Christmas list. Others hang back a little. They might want to stay close to Mom or Dad and check him out first. And that is totally okay.
There is no rush to get them onto Santa’s lap or even sit next to him. They have time to warm up and get comfortable with him first. Sometimes that little bit of extra time is all they need before they are chatting away.
And once they get going, we let them lead the way. Santa can hear about what they are hoping for on Christmas morning or answer one of those very important questions they have been saving just for him.
All of that gives me a chance to photograph your child being themselves with Santa, whether they are a little unsure at first or completely beside themselves with excitement.

The Santa Details You Came Here For
Christmas photos with Santa in Toledo with me gives your child up to 15 minutes with Santa, which means there is actually time to enjoy being with him.
The studio feels cozy and Christmasy, with twinkling lights and trees surrounding them while they settle in with Santa. They can tell him what they are hoping to find under the tree, ask him the questions they have been saving up, or just sit and talk for a bit.
And while they are busy with Santa, I’m photographing all of it. The way their face lights up when he knows their name. How seriously they listen to his answers. That look back at you when they cannot quite believe this is really happening.
Because believing in Santa does not last forever, and I want you to have something that brings you right back to the Christmases when they did.

When Santa Gets the Side Eye
After photographing Santa sessions for the past three years, I can tell you that some kids need a little more time to warm up to Santa, and that’s totally okay! Having up to 15 minutes with him really does make a difference. And the Santa I use is sooo good with those shyer kids. He gives them space and lets them come around when they’re ready.
Last year, one mom did something that I thought was genius. She brought three small presents for Santa to give her little guy and encouraged him to open them while they sat together. Each one had a new Matchbox car inside.
With every present, he got a little more comfortable. By the time he opened the last one, he and Santa were basically BFFs.
So if you already know your child might be a little unsure about Santa, bringing something small that they love can be such an easy way to help them feel more comfortable.

But What Are We Wearing?!
Christmas is one of those times when you can have a little more fun with what everyone wears. The studio already has that cozy Christmas feel, and Santa will be in his classic red suit, so I love choosing outfits that feel festive without making everyone match.
Deep greens look beautiful with Santa’s red, and warm neutrals are always an easy place to start. You can bring in touches of red too, but you definitely don’t need everyone wearing Christmas colors. A little red goes a long way when Santa is already bringing plenty of it!
And this is one time of year when I really love a good plaid. A plaid dress on your little girl or a button up peeking out from under a sweater can bring in those Christmas colors without taking over the whole outfit.
I also love letting kids’ outfits feel like kids. A fun Christmas dress, an interesting sweater, a velvet bow, or something with a little personality can be so cute for these. You don’t have to make everyone look dressed up unless that feels like your family.
If you’re photographing siblings together, think about their outfits as going together rather than matching. Pull a color from one child’s outfit into the other, mix in a subtle pattern, and let each kid still have their own look.
And yes, Christmas pajamas can absolutely work too! Especially if your family leans more cozy and playful at Christmas. I’d choose pajamas that photograph well with the studio rather than anything with huge graphics or characters across the front.
Most importantly, don’t overthink it. Santa is already bringing a whole lot of personality to these photos. Your kids should still look like themselves standing next to him.

For the Christmases When They Still Believe
The first year I was planning Santa photo sessions in Toledo, I knew I had to make sure I saved a time slot for my own kids. My youngest was 5, my middle was 9, and my daughter was 14.
She was definitely “over” Santa by then, but she went along with it for her little brothers. Looking back, I’m so glad she did. Having their big sister there made it even more exciting for them. She played along and let them have their moment without taking any of the fun out of it.
Now they’re a little older and my two bigger kids are well past the Santa phase. Christmas looks different with them than it did even a few years ago.
That’s what makes those photos mean more to me now.
I knew those Santa years wouldn’t last forever. It’s one of the reasons I made sure my own kids had a spot that first year. And now, only a few Christmases later, I can already see how much has changed.
My youngest is still hanging onto that excitement, while the older two have moved on from believing. I knew it would happen, but seeing those photos now reminds me just how short that little window really was.
But I still have those photos from when my boys were completely into it and their big sister loved them enough to help make Christmas feel extra special for them.
If your kids are still in the Santa years, even if you have an older one who is starting to move past them, take the photo. You may be surprised by how much you love having it a few Christmases from now.
