When I was pregnant with my second child, I kept asking myself: how could my heart possibly stretch to love another little person as much as I love my first? The answer came the moment I met her. Love just grows, and in ways you can’t imagine.
I also wondered how my daughter would handle a new sister. Would she feel jealous, confused, or distant? To my surprise, her love poured out almost immediately, in little touches and gentle glances.
But I know not every sibling story starts this way, and that’s okay. Love often takes its time to blossom, and capturing these early moments…both the quiet, tentative ones and the full-on heart-melting ones can be a joy when approached with patience and play. A little prep can go a long way in helping your older child feel excited and comfortable about the session. Use simple, clear language to explain what is going to happen. Set expectations in a playful way by letting them know they will get to play, cuddle, and shower the new baby with love while pictures are being taken. You can even make it extra special by giving them a small gift to share with the baby during their time together in front of the camera.
Finally, remind yourself and them to keep things lighthearted. Toddlers and older kids often mirror your energy. If you are relaxed, excited, and playful, they are more likely to be too. This is all about capturing genuine connection rather than perfection.
Smooth Sailing for You and the Kids
Speaking of starting everything off on a positive note, make sure to schedule your newborn session with your other child’s needs in mind. If they take naps or get cranky when they are hungry, try to avoid having the session run into those times of day.

Some families find it helpful to bring grandma or another helper along. After the family and sibling photos are done, the helper can take the older child on a special outing. Then parents can enjoy the rest of the session in a more relaxed space with just their newborn.
Making Your Big Kid Feel Like a Star
You know the games, songs, and silly activities that make your little one laugh so hard, so don’t hold back during our time together. Using all those fun moments to your advantage can make the session feel playful and natural.
We can also encourage their involvement in little ways, such as holding a tiny hand, helping with a blanket, or giving gentle kisses. One of my favorite “tricks” to encourage closeness to their new sibling is hiding a small snack inside the baby’s blanket and have them find it. Even small tasks help them feel like a big helper and keep them engaged.
Some children love to snuggle up to their new baby, while others have too many wiggles to sit still. Knowing your child’s energy level ahead of time allows us to find creative ways to include them. I have a special rocking horse for energetic kids, or they can even jump on the bed behind mom and baby with dad’s help of course! Dancing is another fun way to keep those wiggles a little contained and it will make for beautiful photos!
Keeping the session short and dynamic for them can be a lifesaver. Little ones tend to shine when they stay energized and engaged, and that’s when the sweetest, most genuine moments happen.
Finding Magic in the Messy
