I recently set out to hire a photographer to update our family photos and boy was that hard!  There were so many choices it was a bit overwhelming. I found the perfect fit for my family (even if that meant hiring a photographer that was over two hours away!) and we were all thrilled with the images.  I hope these tips help you on your quest to find the right photographer for you!

Style is a huge factor in picking the right photographer.  Do you like the moments they showcase in their portfolio?  Do their images make your heart flutter?  Do you yearn for art like you see on their website for your family?  If you can answer yes to these questions, then you definitely are a fan of their style.

 

When picking a photographer, be sure to throughly study their portfolio and blog.  A portfolio will have a few of their best and/or favorite images and their blog will give you a feeling of what a full gallery will look like.  It’s important to know what kind of work they deliver to their clients.  You don’t want to be surprised with the quality of images you receive.

 

There is a photographer for every budget but that doesn’t mean if a photographer is within your budget, they are right for you.  If you are sold on a specific photographer’s style and portfolio, but budget is holding you back…SAVE!  You will most likely be unhappy if you hire another photographer whose work you do not love.  Also, it doesn’t hurt to find out if they have a payment plan.  This may be the perfect choice for you to receive the high quality images you are after while still keeping budget in mind.

 

How important is it that you are hiring a professional?  A professional photographer has sound business practices in place with a prompt turn around time for correspondences and for image and product delivery.  All of their terms and policies should be laid out in a portrait agreement or contract so you know what to expect.  The work they create is consistent and high quality.  They should charge sales tax on applicable products and may carry insurance to ensure all parties are protected.
