The Ultimate Guide to Helping Your Baby Sleep Peacefully
The elusive newborn sleep, sometimes it is super easy to get your baby to sleep and other times it is HARD! I remember when my 4th baby was born and he threw everything I knew about getting a baby to sleep out the window. He always fought me for naps and nighttime was an even bigger struggle. I remember thinking, I’ve done this 3 other times why is it so hard with him?
I’ve come to learn that each baby is very different with their sleep patterns and what encourages them to sleep best but here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way.
Creating the right environment
When you first bring your newborn home, getting them to sleep often isn’t much of a struggle. You might even find yourself needing to wake them for feedings and diaper changes. But as they grow, things start to change. They become more alert and gradually figure out their days and nights, making the transition to sleep a bit more challenging.
One of my favorite ways to ease this transition is by establishing a cozy nap and bedtime routine. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. A short story – we loved “Goodnight Moon” for naps – followed by a few minutes of cuddling, and then laying them down while they’re drowsy can work wonders.
Creating a sleep-friendly environment is just as important. My babies needed a dark room, so blackout shades and curtains were essential. A noise machine to drown out household sounds also helped them drift off to sleep.
And let’s not forget the power of a good swaddle. Whether it’s a blanket or a sleep sack, swaddling made my little ones feel secure and comforted, especially when they were sleeping away from me.
Timing is everything
When you choose to try and put your baby down for a nap has a huge role in how well they sleep or if they sleep at all.
As babies grow, their need for naps decreases, making it crucial to pay attention to the clock and learn their sleep cues. Most babies follow a sleep, eat, awake cycle. If they’ve been awake and alert for a while and start to get fussy, chances are it’s time for a nap.
An overtired baby can be challenging to settle, so helping them transition from awake to asleep as soon as they start showing signs of fussiness can save you both a lot of frustration. By staying focused to their cues and needs, you can create a smoother, more peaceful sleep experience for your little one.
If all else fails
If it seems like you’ve tried everything and your baby just won’t settle, taking a break and trying again later is always a good approach. When my little ones resisted napping, I often found putting them in my baby carrier while I did chores around the house did the trick. The closeness and gentle movement usually helped them drift off within ten minutes. It was a comforting way to help them sleep while still being productive. If you don’t have a good baby carrier yet, I highly recommend getting one—they’re incredibly handy with a baby.
