Best Summer Locations for Photos in Northwest Ohio

Summer in Northwest Ohio feels like long golden evenings, wildflowers brushing against little bare feet, ice cream melting too fast, and kids staying up way past bedtime. Around here, summer nights usually end with my kids still outside long after they were supposed to come in, either spraying each other with the hose or bouncing on the trampoline while the sun disappears. Itโ€™s messy and loud and the kind of thing I already know Iโ€™ll miss someday.

Thatโ€™s probably why I love summer sessions so much.

Everything feels a little slower and more relaxed this time of year. The tall grass is glowing, the flowers are blooming, and the kids are usually happiest when they have room to run around instead of being told to sit still. If youโ€™ve been thinking about updated photos, summer gives us some of the prettiest spots around Toledo to soak all of that in. From flower fields to quiet beaches and golden wildflower spots, here are some of the best summer locations for photos in northwest Ohio.

Where the Wildflowers Bloom

Summer really puts on a show with all the gorgeous wildflowers. Some of my favorites are the daisies and black eyed susans. I love the soft white of a daisy field and how every little bloom somehow looks perfectly placed. Then later in the summer, the golden black eyed susans start popping against all that green and they photograph so beautifully. And the Queen Anneโ€™s lace always makes me smile when it starts showing up everywhere toward the end of summer.

Weโ€™re so lucky that a lot of these blooms can be found tucked into Metroparks or even growing along random roads. I love stumbling across new spots covered in wildflowers. It feels a little like finding a hidden pocket of summer you want to stay in for awhile.

These spots are especially beautiful at sunset when everything starts glowing gold and the kids are free to wander and explore a little. Wildflower fields always feel relaxed to me in the best way. The kids can run through the paths, pick little flower bouquets, and snuggle up with their parents parents while everyone just enjoys being together.ย

Theyโ€™re probably one of my favorite locations for families with young kids or maternity sessions because they feel soft, playful, and full of summer.

The Dreamiest Summer Gardens

Speaking of flowers, two of my favorite summer locations are Gust Brothers Flower Farm and GardenView Flowers. Stepping into the gardens at either one feels a little like walking into a storybook.

There are colorful blooms everywhere you turn, from giant sunflowers in the summer to rows and rows of flowers that completely surround you. I always love the little tucked away corners and hidden paths throughout the gardens too. Every direction somehow feels beautiful.

These spots photograph so well because everything feels soft, colorful, and full of texture. Theyโ€™re especially pretty for families wanting that romantic summer feel, and kids usually love wandering through the flower rows and pointing out all their favorite blooms along the way. One of my favorite things about these locations is how immersive they feel. After a few minutes, kids are usually far more interested in exploring than worrying about photos, which always helps everyone settle in and enjoy the evening together.

The best part is both locations stay gorgeous through so much of the summer, so there are usually beautiful blooms no matter when your session falls.

The Beachiest

One of my absolute favorite summer spots, and honestly one I love just as much in spring and fall too, is Maumee Bay State Park. Thereโ€™s just so much goodness there.

We all know about โ€œthe hill,โ€ but in the summer when the grass grows tall and the sun starts dipping behind it, everything glows in the prettiest way. Itโ€™s one of those spots that somehow feels even better in person.

And if you catch the park at the right time, you can even find gorgeous little pockets of wildflowers tucked throughout. I still remember stumbling across this dreamy spot one evening that was completely covered in blooms with the sunset pouring through everything. It felt like something out of a movie.

And of courseโ€ฆ the beach.

I love taking families down to the quieter little โ€œsecretโ€ beach area and then wandering out toward the rocks as the sun goes down. Itโ€™s usually the point in the session where kids suddenly get a second wind. They can throw rocks, splash at the waterโ€™s edge, explore a little, and just enjoy being there. Beach sessions always feel playful and relaxed to me, and the sunset reflecting off the water at Maumee Bay is so pretty during summer evenings.

Trails, Trees, & Summer Light

Forest trails are such an underrated spot for summer sessions. Thereโ€™s something about the way the light filters through the trees that feels so peaceful and cozy, especially during those warmer summer evenings. And bonusโ€ฆ the shade usually helps keep everyone a little cooler too, which parents especially appreciate by the end of July.

I love how much variety trails can give us without having to walk very far. One minute weโ€™re tucked into tall trees surrounded by greenery and the next we find a little patch of golden light pouring through an opening. Kids usually love exploring the paths, climbing on logs, or searching for little treasures along the trail, which always keeps things feeling playful and relaxed.

These spots are especially beautiful earlier in the summer when everything is extra green and lush, but really they stay gorgeous all season long.

Your Favorite Summer Placesย

We really donโ€™t have to venture far at all for a fun evening together. Some of my favorite sessions have been the simplest ones. Getting ice cream downtown, riding bikes around your neighborhood, running through the sprinkler in your backyard, or letting the kids stay up a little too late catching lightning bugs can all make such meaningful backdrops for photos.

Thereโ€™s something really special about documenting your family in the places you already spend your time together. Your backyard trampoline, the driveway covered in sidewalk chalk, the bikes tossed in the grass, sticky ice cream hands, or your kids racing each other down the sidewalk someday become the things you miss most about this season.

These sessions tend to feel especially relaxed because everyone is already comfortable and the kids usually settle in so quickly when theyโ€™re doing something familiar and fun. It turns the evening into more of a memory together instead of just โ€œpicture day,โ€ and I love seeing your reaction when you see the whole story of your family.ย

Soโ€ฆ Which Location Fits Your Family Best?

Still trying to decide which location would fit your family best? I always tell families to think less about picking the โ€œprettiestโ€ spot and more about choosing a place that feels like your family.

If your kids love exploring and staying busy, the beach might be the perfect fit. If your family feels happiest surrounded by nature and flowers, then a wildflower field or flower farm could be such a beautiful option. And if you want something a little quieter, cooler, and cozy feeling, forest trails are always so pretty in the summer.

Itโ€™s also helpful to think about the overall feeling you want your photos to have. Beaches tend to feel playful and adventurous. Flower fields feel soft and colorful. Forest trails usually feel peaceful and cozy. Around town or at home sessions often feel nostalgic and really personal because they capture the places your family already spends time together.

And truthfully, lighting matters more than the location itself most of the time. The way the sun filters through trees, glows through tall grass, or reflects off the water is what really brings that warm summer feeling into your photos. A simple field at sunset can end up being just as beautiful as a more elaborate location when the light is right.ย

No matter which spot you choose, the goal is always the same. Creating an atmosphere where your family can relax, have fun together, and preserve this season exactly as it feels right now.

Soaking In This Summer Season

No matter which location you end up choosing, summer sessions always have a way of feeling a little extra special. Maybe itโ€™s the late sunsets, the warm air, or just the fact that life feels a little slower this time of year. The kids are barefoot half the time, everyone stays up too late, and somehow the smallest little moments end up becoming the ones you want to hold onto forever.

And the best part is, your location really doesnโ€™t have to be complicated to be meaningful. If youโ€™re not sure which location would fit your family best, Iโ€™m always happy to help you figure it out. I also help with styling so everything feels cohesive with the setting you choose without adding more stress to your plate.

Summer always seems to fly by faster than we expect, and before long weโ€™re packing backpacks and heading back into another school year. If youโ€™ve been wanting to preserve this season your family is in right now, Iโ€™d love to spend an evening together soaking it all in before it slips into the next one.
