What to Wear for Family Pictures
If figuring out what to wear for family photos feels a little overwhelming, you are definitely not alone. Coordinating outfits for multiple people, making sure everyone feels comfortable, and hoping it all comes together well in photos can quickly start to feel like one more thing sitting on your plate.
That’s exactly why personalized styling has become such a big part of the experience I offer my families. From personal outfit recommendations and direct shopping links to helping everything feel cohesive with your location, season, and overall vision, I’m here to help make this part of the process feel easier and a whole lot less stressful.
The “what do we wear” spiral
We’ve all been there… staring at the pile of clothes on your bed wondering how choosing outfits for family photos somehow became your full time job for the week.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt completely overwhelmed by this part of the process myself. Between coordinating everyone, trying to make sure things feel like your family and hoping it all comes together well in photos, it can feel like a lot really quickly.
And I hated the thought of you feeling that way too. I wanted to find a way to make things feel easier, more manageable, and honestly a lot less stressful… and that’s how my styling assistance was born.
Most families are surprised by just how hands on my approach really is. It’s so much more than sending over a styling guide or a few Pinterest pins and wishing you luck. We really dive in together so every outfit feels connected to your family, your session, and the feeling you want these photos to have.
Here’s what personalized styling actually includes when we plan your session together.
Your family, your style
Choosing what to wear for family pictures really starts with your family. I love getting a feel for the pieces you naturally gravitate toward, the colors you love, and the styles that make you feel the most like yourself. From there, I’m able to recommend outfits that fit your preferences while also photographing beautifully together.
I’m also thinking through how everything works as a whole. The location you chose, the season, the colors in the environment, and even the time of year all play a part in helping your images feel cohesive and connected. A summer session in an open field is going to call for something very different than a cozy fall session in the woods or an in home newborn session.
And of course, we want the kids to feel comfortable too. I know some kids strongly prefer shorts over pants or would happily wear a dress every single day if they could. Keeping those little preferences in mind can make such a difference in how everyone feels during your session. When kids are comfortable, they’re usually much more relaxed, playful, and happy to just love on their people.

Like a personal shopper…but for family photos
My favorite part of the process is putting together your personal recommendations. This is where I find pieces for everyone in the family, including accessories, and pull everything together into a visual storyboard so you can skip the “clothes all over the bed” stage completely.
I usually start with the colors you’re naturally drawn to and build from there. Then I begin layering in texture, subtle patterns, and pieces that will move beautifully when photographed. I’m thinking through how everything works together as a whole while still making sure each person feels comfortable and like themselves.
I also pay attention to the little details that make a big difference in photos, like choosing colors that complement one another well, fabrics that photograph beautifully, and making sure your family looks connected without everyone feeling identical.
From there, I coordinate siblings in a way that feels natural, help balance dressier pieces with more relaxed ones, and make sure little ones can still comfortably play, snuggle, explore, and move during your session.
It really is a bit of a science to bring everything together in a way that feels relaxed and polished all at the same time.

So You Can Stop Searching “Family Photo Outfits Ideas” at Midnight
One of the biggest helps in this process is that I’m not just telling you what kind of outfit to look for. I’m actually finding pieces in your sizes and sending direct links to purchase them, which saves you from having to spend hours hunting things down for everyone yourself. Most families give me a budget to keep in mind, and we usually mix a few new pieces with things you already own like jeans, neutral shoes, or other closet staples.
I also love recommending pieces that can continue being part of your everyday wardrobe long after your session is over. Maybe it’s a plaid jacket your little one can wear all fall and winter or a pair of sandals you’ll end up reaching for all summer long. I want these recommendations to feel practical too, not just pretty for photos.
And you definitely don’t have to purchase everything that’s recommend. Sometimes having visuals simply helps you look at the pieces already hanging in your closet a little differently or helps you keep certain colors, textures, or styles in mind the next time you’re out shopping.

All of the looks above were sent to my clients with direct links and sizing for each person in their family. They can pull ideas from it or shop straight from the board to make getting ready for their session feel simple.
Location + Season
When and where we take your photos plays a huge role in what will photograph best. One of the things I’m always thinking through is how your wardrobe will work with the environment around you so your family naturally stands out in the image.
For example, if we’re surrounded by lots of green, choosing colors outside of that helps your family pop beautifully against the landscape. During fall, rich blues can look especially beautiful against all the warm autumn tones. And if we’re shooting somewhere filled with colorful flowers, softer and more neutral wardrobe choices help keep the focus balanced instead of competing with everything in the background.
The season matters too, not just because of color palettes, but because of comfort and practicality. Spring and fall usually call for layering options since the weather can change quickly, while summer sessions tend to work best with lighter fabrics like linen or gauze that breathe well and move beautifully.
No matter the time of year though, I almost always try to incorporate texture. Little details like knits, linen, gauze, embroidery, or layered fabrics help add depth and softness to your images without distracting from the people in them.

For this late summer session on the water with a family of six, we wanted each of the boys to have a look that felt like their own while still fitting together naturally. Mixing button downs, knits, overalls, and different textures helped bring that to life.
Showing up should feel easy
After helping so many families navigate the “what do we wear for family pictures?” question, I know how overwhelming this part of the process can feel and I also know how much of a difference it makes to have someone help guide you through it.
This has honestly become one of my favorite parts of the pre session planning process because it gives us a chance to talk through the overall look and feeling you want for your session while also getting to know your family a little more along the way.
When we plan everything together, you don’t have to second guess whether outfits will work well together or scramble for a last minute Target run because something suddenly doesn’t feel right. Instead, you can show up knowing everything is already taken care of and focus on loving on your people instead of stressing about what everyone is wearing.
You already carry enough mental load as a parent. Let me take this piece off your plate for you.

The “why”
The biggest thing I always want families to know is that what you wear will never matter more than your connection. The way your kids reach for your hand, snuggle into you, laugh together, or just settle into being themselves is what truly makes your photos meaningful.
Styling simply helps support the overall feeling of your images. When colors, textures, and pieces work well together, it allows the focus to stay on your family and the connection you share instead of certain things pulling your eye away.
It’s never about needing expensive clothes or perfectly curated outfits. It’s about helping everything feel cohesive, comfortable, and true to your family so you can fully settle into the moments that already mean everything.
That’s really why I put so much care into this part of the process. When you’re not stressed about what everyone is wearing or wondering if things will photograph well together, you’re able to show up more present. You can focus on holding your babies close, playing with your kids, and soaking in this season instead of managing all the little details.
