April Storytellers Blog Circle

I’m so excited to be joining in the storytellers blog circle. This is an educational blog circle that is made up of Offset artists. Offset has a wonderful selection of images for sale (including some from me!). The thought behind this blog circle is to share the behind the scenes process of an image.

This month, I chose this image of my two kiddos dying Easter eggs. They both had so much fun making different colors and getting messy. I had to be quick in thinking through my composition and settings because of that mess. Managing a messy activity and photos can be tough!

I knew I wanted to be sure to focus on the details of this tradition, to include different perspectives of them dying the eggs. I shot a few photos of them from overhead but ultimately, loved this image the most. The details of both their stained fingers and the backlight is what got me. Plus my daughter’s firm grip on the newly dyed egg. I like the balance between both of their arms. I also love how you can see all the dye on the paper. The colors really play an important role in this image.

This image was shot in my small dining room without any windows (a photographer’s nightmare!). It was a cloudy day outside and that didn’t help with the lack of light either! Luckily, we have a big window in the kitchen and another one in our living room. I ended up opening all the blinds in our living room and working off the light that was reaching them at the table. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too dark after bumping my ISO and keeping my shutter speed a bit slower. I typically like keep my aperture at 2.8 as that is my “sweet” spot for my camera.

I hope you have enjoyed the peek behind the scenes of this image. Keep up the fun and head over to Stella Lebel. Be sure to follow the links until you end up back here.00
